Ramadan Mubarak! Ramadan Kareem.

Alhamdulillah, we are once again in the Holy Month of Ramadan, a time of spiritual renewal as we make efforts to increase our spiritual devotions through prayers, Qur’an reading and good deeds. Ramadan is also a time of giving, as Prophet Muhammad once said, “It is the month of charity, and a month in which a believer’s sustenance is increased.”

For the third year running, SimplyIslam is organising the annual Ramadan Charity Basket program. This year, SimplyIslam is pleased to support the Muslim Kidney Action Association (MKAC) and also the Ang Mo Kio FSC (AMK-FSC).

The MKAC is a registered charity and has been in the forefront of providing care and support to Muslims who are suffering from kidney failure and chronic ailments and providing financial assistance to their families. The AMK-FSC runs three family service agencies which provide family and welfare services to residents of Ang Mo Kio and Seng Kang housing estates.

Insha’Allah SimplyIslam hope to raise $10,000 to provide food provisions and financial assistance to some of MKAC and AMK-FSC most needy welfare recipients. The food provisions include rice, milk, sugar, dry foods and other basic amenities including Eid novelties.

Let’s reach out and help them in their needs for Ramadan and Hari Raya (Eidul Fitr), Insha’Allah. Your donations would bring much needed relief for the poor and needy. You may donate through any of the following means:

Ustadh Muhammad Umar was the youngest person to be invited on the BBC HardTalk to discuss the aftermath of the 7th July terrorist attacks in London. He is only 28 years old, but he has appeared on numerous TV and radio interviews, and has delivered lectures throughout the UK, USA, Europe, Middle East and Asia on Islam and the West and interfaith matters. He is a great advocator of tolerance and peaceful co-existence. At the young age of 18 he went to the blessed land of Mauritania, where he studied with the learned and noble scholars of Islam like Shaykh Muhammad Salim weld Adood and Shaykh Abdur Rahman weld Hajj (son of Shaykh Murabit al Hajj). He took the Shadili Spiritual Order directly from the eminent Shaykh Hasan al-Ghumari of Morocco. He also took Ijaza in Aqeedah and Hadith from Shaykh Ahmad Darwish al-Misri. His search for knowledge and truth has taken him to various places from the deserts of Mauritania to Morocco, Egypt and the UK. Currently he resides with his family in Greater Manchester, United Kingdom.

Lecture Synopsis
Music, considered taboo practice by many traditional Muslims, has also become one of the most prominent methods for Muslims to share their faith internationally through Muslim Hip Hop. Hip Hop is a global phenomenon reaching from the skyscaper laden skies of New York all the way to the deep deserts of Arabia and beyond. It is a subculture that transcends boundaries of language, gender, and religion. Deen Tight brings to the screen the untold story of Western Muslims struggling to find a balance between their culture and their religion. Filmed on location with Muslim rappers, DJs, slam poets, breakdancers and a graffiti artist in concerts, recording studios, at homes and in the streets. The documentary focuses on the perceived conflict between traditional religious ideals and modernity, as well as both the positives and negatives of Western Pop culture on todays’ Muslim youth, and discusses intimately the challenges they face trying to balance their faith, culture, and the pressures of daily Western life.

The aptly-named “Book of Assistance” (Arabic: “Risalatu’l Mu’awanah”) is today in widespread use among Islamic scholars and teachers in Arabia, Southeast Asia and East Africa. The book is a manual of prayers and practical ethics that is invaluable to all who love the Prophet and wanting to emulate his exalted character.

The author Imam Abdallah Ibn-Alawi Al-Haddad (d. 1720), lived at Tarim in the Hadramaut valley between Yemen and Oman, and is widely held to have been the ‘renewer’ of the twelfth Islamic century. A direct descendant of the Prophet, his sanctity and direct experience of God are clearly reflected in his writings, which include several books, a collection of Sufi letters, and a volume of mystical poetry.

The genius of this book is that it condenses the collected wisdom of centuries of Muslim spiritual doctors such as Imam-al Ghazali into a handy, brief manual. For centuries books like this have shaped men and women of all races, from Indonesians to Swahilis, into shining examples of godliness and beautiful conduct.

Anyone who implements the advice of the book is on the path of the perfection of character, characterized by everything from kindness and charity (including a cheerful countenance), to waking up in the middle of the night to worship, to inward states such as thankfulness and trust in God’s will. Like all men of God, Imam al-Haddad’s writing is clear, sober and eloquent.

Currently he serves as an Instructor at Zaytuna Institute and as a Muslim Chaplain for the State of California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. He is also the Director of the Zawiya Outreach Program and teaches a popular “Intro to Islam” class series at Zaytuna Institute. Usama Canon is also the Founding Director of Ta’leef Collective and maintains an active role in various facets of outreach and education, concentrating on issues facing Muslim youth, assisting converts, and developing support systems for Muslim ex-offenders. “The Book of Assistance” classes are among his popular programs.
